When Earl Tupper was a young man he often dreamed of becoming a famous inventor and multimillionaire. The realization of those dreams began in earnest in 1946 when he introduced his first Tupperware product to the world. By the early 1950’s his company benefited from explosive demand for its products and in 1958 he sold his company for sixteen million dollars, divorced his wife, and bought an island in Central America. Earl Tupper first tried marketing his line of plastic containers using traditional retail channels. Even with an aggressive marketing campaign, Tupperware products were not selling well in department stores. It was not until he met and teamed up with Brownie Wise in 1948 did he see demand pick-up. This business alliance between the two led to an entirely new form of distribution strategy, direct marketing.
Brownie Wise was selling huge quantities of Tupperware products at parties she hosted. When Tupper saw the success of her in-home product demonstrations he abandoned retail sales altogether and marketed his products exclusively through home parties. Soon thousands of women began hosting these parties for a representative.
The way Tupperware parties worked was the hostess would invite to her home friends, neighbors and relatives for Tupperware product demonstrations. The host would then receive free gifts and products from the representative based on home many sales were made at the party.
Products could be found for any food type and every occasion imaginable. There were servers for chips and dips, keeping perishables cold outside, traveling with desserts and storing sugar and flour.
