Big League Dreams

Two former big league baseball players had dreams. Big dreams which come alive at the Big League in the California desert resort city of Cathedral City just outside of Palm Springs.

The Odekirk brothers, Rick and Jeff wanted to share their passion and love for sports, in particular baseball, fast and slow pitch, by creating an environment that would give participants, for the most part regular people young and old, the opportunity to experience the big league feeling by creating environments that would give them that chance. In early 1998 they created the first of the Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, California just outside of Palm Springs.

They weren’t the only ones with a dream. Kirk Walker, a softball coach at Oregon State, wondered why there were no world - class tournaments on the West Coast. Many of the West Coast teams were seeking a more convenient venue to play and half never went to the then existing big league tournament known as the “Lead-off Classic” in Columbus, Ohio. Walker began planning an inaugural event in 2001 and the first “Classic” was held in 2004. Walker was able to bring together the UCLA, Arizona and the US Olympic team to the first event and The Cathedral City Classic had been born. Big League Dream Parks like it have become immensely popular and construction has exploded throughout the United States.

Many have replica fields so one can play fast pitch or softball in replica stadiums like Ebbets Field, Forbes Field, Angel Stadium and others including some well know Polo Fields. Participants can experience the exciting experience playing and watching world - class athletics in a major stadium setting as they can in Cathedral City. The latest addition is a spectacular complex which recently opened in Las Vegas.

The Cathedral City complex has grown remarkably over the years and the stadium is regularly filled with spectators overflowing onto the field. As presently construed Cathedral City has five fields with replicas of Fenway, Yankee and Wrigley parks. In addition to these three fields there are two fields located at each end of the existing venue not to mention a 20,000 Square foot indoor soccer stadium and restaurant.

The venues are envisioned as multi-purpose use stadiums and feature everything from dog and auto shows to birthday celebrations and weddings and concerts. My first trip to the Cathedral City Park was to attend a sold out concert by Winona Ryder. My second field experience was attending the 2009 NCAA Womens College World Series Softball Tournament where I had the very special opportunity to see defending Champion Washington play talented Arizona. All of this with no maintenance cost to the community and the fields supporters.

Baseball, softball, soccer fans and all others are enthusiastically encouraged to visit the park and attend the Cathedral City Classic for world - class athletics on your next vacation to Palm Springs and the California desert resort cities.

The Palm Springs Indian Canyons

In my last trip to Palm Springs, I spent an afternoon hiking the Palm Springs Indian Canyons. Located in Palm Springs, California the Palm Springs Indian Canyons consist of three trails to choose from: Palm Canyon, Andreas Canyon, and Murray Canyon. Each with an outdoor adventure for the active traveler.

The first and easiest is Murray Canyon. It is the easiest of the three to hike and is a simple trek from Andreas Canyon. Murray has both foot and equestrian trails that lead to the beautiful recreation areas that lay among thousands of palm trees. If you are lucky and keep your eyes open, you might just catch a glimpse of an endangered species, the Peninsula Big Horn Sheep. We saw mule deer and other wild animals that roam the high ground above the canyon. Murray Canyon is less visited and has a secluded beauty that must be seen to be appreciated.

Andreas Canyon has a half-mile lush radius with contrasting views of the magnificent fan palms and over 150 species of plants. It is the perfect place to bring your camera. Andreas provides scenic foot trails that lead through the canyon passing groves of skirted palms, unusual rock formations and the Andreas creek. It is a tranquil setting that is excellent for photography, bird watching, or just a quiet picnic at one of the many tables along the trail.

Palm Canyon is the last of three. Fifteen-miles long Palm Canyon has indigenous flora and fauna which are a breathtaking contrast to the stark rocky gorges and barren desert land beyond. It is equipped with a moderately graded, paved foot path that winds down into the canyon for picnicking near the stream, meditating under the sun, exploring the formations, hiking or horseback riding through the terrain. We found a trading post for hiking maps, refreshments, Indian art & artifacts, books, jewelry, pottery and conversational cultural lore.

The Palm Springs Indian Canyons are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. October thru July and then July thru September open on weekends only. Prices vary from adults, seniors and children.

The Palm Springs Indian Canyons are a perfect stop for the adventure traveler on your next Palm Springs vacation.

Black Diamond in the media

I’ve been an avid follower of Bruce Parry for years now his new TV series in the Arctic continues to be my favourite to date. In the last episode Bruce was at Greenland spending time on a hunt with the native Inuit people.

It was fascinating to observe that there were still wearing skins to safeguard them in the harsh climate, however I was surprised to find out that amongst the seal and polar bear skins many were dressed in technical outdoors clothing and one brand separated itself - black diamond . Now I’m into my outdoors pursuits so to see a guy who spends time in temperatures as little as minus 50 wearing this label of clothing must be the best endorsement you can find.

So straight onto the internet to discover what Black Diamond had to offer - if it’s good enough for the Inuit then it’s going to definitely keep me warm on a cold winter’s day out walking!

What a website - first of all you are presented with is an amazing picture of a male climbing a frozen waterfall - Sam Elias that’s sponsored by Black Diamond - what a beautiful shot.If you’re into hiking, climbing or skiing therefore you want technical wear from a brand which the pros wear (in addition to the Inuit!) then Black Diamond will have something suitable for you. A little bird who has just come back from a couple weeks from the Swiss Alps mentioned that all the uber cool ski instructors were wearing Black Diamond.

As a brand they are very much into giving back along with a very much into environmental conservation having a three fold policy 1) decreasing the environmental footprint of the production and operations; 2) building products with sustainability under consideration; and 3) supporting grassroots environmental organizations and campaigns on local and national levels.

As someone who is a skier who occasionally goes hiking I’m not sure I could justify or require the dangerous of equipment that Black Diamond offers but if I was blasting the slopes on a regular basis (if the job will allow it) I would definitely be checking out this brand. They of course make t-shirts if you decide to just want to become a brand hag (and I do) you’ll be able to at least look like a pro.

Black Diamond quite a cool company.

A Succinct Guide To Canadian Geese

Since the recent past, Canadian Geese have become too numerous not only in the urbanized areas but also in the suburbs of the country. The bird is basically black in color from the head to the neck, and the color changes from tan to cream over the breast. It has a brown back with a whitish strip over the chin.

About one or two decades ago ago the people deliberately took efforts to bring back the Canada Geese to different regions of the country. It is however, peculiar to note that now these geese are treated like unwanted pests, as their number multiplied beyond the manageable limits.

Among the numerous subspecies of the geese of Canada, eleven of them have been named. A few of these birds can be distinguished as a result of their varying features. Geese of darker color are common to western Canada, while smaller geese are primarily found in the north.

An interesting fact about the Canada geese is that the migratory populations are no longer going as far to the south during the winter months as they used to previously. This change in northward migration has been accredited to the changes in farming practices which makes grain more available during fall and winter, combined with changes in the weather and hunting patterns.

Generally after the breeding season, the Canadian Geese travel to the northern parts. A few of them unfortunately sometimes lose their nests. Such geese, along with those that do not breed fly to the far north travelling nearly one thousand and five hundred kilometers. They move into the thick foliage for molting. By the end of summer, even those that had chosen to avoid winter-migration reach the north for molting.

The decision of mating partners depends exclusively on their size. An exceptional attribute of the Canada Geese is that they form a partnership for life. A variant of the Canada Geese of a especially large size was declared extinct in the 1900s. Subsequently, numerous of these birds were reintroduced in various parts of the country. Unfortunately, their population became too big, and so they were regarded as pests.

Predominantly found in marshy land and on grassy areas or grain-cultivated fields close to water resources, the Canadian Geese like to reside amidst the grass. This is because they can easily feed their chicks, while at the same time checking out for predatory animals. Hence, it is not surprising to find flocks of these birds in human-inhabited places like the airport, grassy lawns, parks and golf courses.

Over the seasons of spring and summer, Canadian Geese usually feed on grass, decaying cabbage leaves, eelgrass and marshy plants. In winter and autumn, plenty of blueberries and other grains and seeds are available for their food. Two of their major subspecies have amazingly evolved themselves to their surroundings and thrive well.

These birds lay 2 to 8 eggs in one clutch. They are white colored with a creamy shade. Measuring 8.3 centimeters in breadth and 3.3 inches in length, they incubate for nearly 25 to 28 days. The eggs hatch to reveal little yellow goslings. Their eyes are openwhen they are hatched. After a nestling time of 45 to 50 days, they are able to live on their own.

Canada goose eggs are three times the size of chicken eggs. Follow the link for further Canadian goose information.

Family tents are a very necessary piece of equipment if you are going camping with your family. Unless you are planning to sleep beneath the stars, or you are going camping in a caravan, a tent will be a fairly important addition to your camping experience. When choosing something suitable, here are some things you may want to think about.

Of course, one of your primary concerns will certainly be the capacity of any tenant. At the end of the day it is always better to choose a tent with a capacity that is a little bit more than it suggests. This will allow you to sleep far more comfortably.

Make sure that you find a tent that is going to be very easy to pitch, especially if you are lacking in camping experience. Pitching a tent can be a real hassle and so you want to find something that won’t cause too many problems.

Compare the ventilation system on any tent as well. System might be quite a strong word, but it is important that you compare the different ventilation flaps on every single tent you look at. This will be very important, particularly if you are going somewhere with a lot of bugs and somewhere that is very warm as well.

It is also important to think about how heavy the tent will be. This won’t necessarily be a very important concern if you are simply going to drive to a camping spot and then pick up the tent, but if you are carrying the tent for miles up into the hills it certainly may play a part. As such, try to pick a tent that won’t be too heavy for you.
